Osedax – deep sea worm

Whale bones sucked of life

The Osedax worm

It is hard  to find a deep sea creature that isn’t equal parts horrifying and mind blowing. Whale falls (dead whales that make their way to the deep) are a staple for many members of a unique group of niche filling organisms. They rely quite heavily on the rare but super rich food source of a giant carcass. The worm Osedax mucofloris (literally translating to bone eating snot flower) makes its living extracting food from the very bones of the whale. Nothing is wasted in the deep.
